ACQUISITIONS ASSISTANT/MELLON UNIVERSITY PRESS DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP, MIT Press, to work with acquisitions editors, authors, peer reviewers, and projects through the acquisitions process. Will also work with the marketing, manuscript editorial, design, and production departments on behalf of specific book projects. May take on additional projects as well. Responsibilities include tagging and formatting manuscripts for production; preparing publishing plans; researching competing books and potential expert peer reviewers; contacting peer reviewers and tracking reviews; processing payments and book orders for authors, reviewers, and agents; managing the endorsements process for forthcoming titles; assisting with contract requests, production cost estimates, and financial projections for projects; guiding authors on manuscript formatting, art preparation, and permissions; preparing materials for internal editorial approval and publishing committee meetings; representing the Press and interacting with book buyers and authors at conferences; and attending in-house acquisitions, editorial board, publishing committee, transmittal, and packaging meetings.
The Mellon University Press Diversity Fellowship Program seeks to increase diversity in scholarly publishing by providing fourteen-month fellowships in the acquisitions departments of six university presses.
REQUIRED: B.A./B.S. and a commitment to using an understanding of the diversity of human experiences in developing, recruiting, and marketing manuscripts and books. PREFERRED: M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.; evidence of academic achievement in fields that correspond to the major lists of the participating publishers or are relevant to diversity; commitment to pursuing a career in academic publishing; and sustained personal engagement with low income communities and/or communities within the U.S. that are underrepresented in publishing and demonstrated ability to bring the understandings gleaned from such engagement to the daily work of academic publishing. Application deadline: March 15, 2020. Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of representatives of the participating presses and the AUP. Fellows will be notified by April 15, 2020, and begin the fellowship on June 1, 2020.
