Announcing the 2018 W.A. Dwiggins Award Recipient: Jamie Carter

Bookbuilders of Boston is thrilled to announce Jamie Carter as the winner of the 2018 W.A. Dwiggins Award. Jamie will receive this award at the 61st Annual New England Book Show on May 8, 2018, in a special evening themed around the history of the Dwiggins Award.

Jamie Carter is an invaluable member of our Bookbuilders community. She has played an active role in Bookbuilders for the past seventeen years, including her terms as a board member and as the immediate past president of Bookbuilders.

In her role as president, Jamie worked to expand Bookbuilders’ reach to recognize the innovations publishers are making in our ever-changing marketplace. To this end, in 2014 she founded NEPCo (the New England Publishing Collaboration Awards), a live, competitive awards show that honors excellence among publishers and partners from other industries working together to develop new products, learn new technologies, and embrace change.

Jamie currently works as manager of publisher account management at Copyright Clearance Center, where she has worked since 2011, finding opportunities to license content and increase royalty revenue.

Jamie’s publishing career began at Arcadia Publishing, a UK publisher with an office in Dover, New Hampshire. Hers was a start-up division; Jamie acquired titles, did production work and editing, and even sold books on the road from time to time. In the earliest days of the internet, she worked at a web-design company, then worked for six years as a manufacturing buyer at Heinemann in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Jamie moved back online in 2007, when she became product manager at Publisher Alley, a subscription website for analysis of book sales. Publisher Alley was owned by Baker & Taylor at the time, and is now owned by EBSCO. In this position, she was the editor of Alley Talk, a free companion site for Publisher Alley featuring bestseller listings and industry white papers.

“When I was asked to serve as President one of my first thoughts was, ‘Oh wow, I have some huge shoes to fill’,” said Iris Febres, President of Bookbuilders. “She started NEPCo and ran with it and it has become a wonderful event for Bookbuilders and the community. She made it look easy. That said, Jamie is absolutely remarkable and I am always in awe of her work ethic—she inspires me to do better as President. She unquestionably epitomizes the spirit of Bookbuilders and I am so happy she’s receiving the Dwiggins.”

We are honored to award this year’s W.A. Dwiggins Award to Jamie Carter for her passion, creativity, and continued service to the Bookbuilders community. Please join us at the Book Show to celebrate Jamie’s accomplishments.
