Announcing the 2017 William A. Dwiggins Award Recipient: Tom Plain

Tom Plain’s dedication to the publishing industry is sincerely evident: “For over twenty years, I participated in Bookbuilders of Boston’s mission of bringing together those involved in book publishing and manufacturing. After a number of years, I realized it wasn’t as much about the books as it was about the people you meet and help along the way.”

Bookbuilders of Boston is honored to announce Tom Plain as the 2017 W. A. Dwiggins Award recipient for 2017.

Tom Plain is Vice President, Book Publishing Sales for King Printing, a digital book printer in Lowell, Massachusetts. Prior to that he worked for IBT/Hamilton, Von Hoffmann, and Sheridan Books. He also served as a graphic arts director and in-plant printing manager for a religious publisher in Ohio. Tom is a former board member and past president of Bookbuilders of Boston (2011–2013).

A true veteran of the industry, Tom has worked in printing and publishing since 1975. His first job after college was a work study in print shop bindery, learning to run cutters, stitchers, and collators. He did handwork, mailing, and later, folders and other machines. Tom was subsequently promoted to Graphic Arts Director and became responsible for typesetting, design, printing, and finishing, in addition to outside purchasing. Tom moved to New England in 1989 as a sales rep for BookCrafters, a predecessor of Sheridan Books. He has been with King Printing since 2013, where he helps prospective and current clients in New England and beyond with various printing needs, such as journals, catalogs, magazines, and digital inkjet books.

“Since my first Bookbuilders meeting, I have valued the sense of community and purpose the organization offers, especially to newcomers. We meet people we might otherwise have never known, who can and will help you. And over time it becomes a way to give back to the people and industry where we have made our living,” Tom said.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky and the father of three grown children, he lives with his wife in Milford, Massachusetts. His current outside interests include hiking, kayaking, simple cooking, and genealogy.

We are thrilled to honor Tom with the 2017 W. A. Dwiggins Award.

Tom will be presented with the William A. Dwiggins Award at the 60th Annual New England Book Show on May 9, 2017. Tickets for the event are on sale now!
