Senior Editor and Director of Publications

The primary responsibility of the position is to manage the planning, development, editing, design, production, distribution, and marketing of all Lincoln Institute publications, including books, policy focus reports, working papers, conference paper
Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Duties and Activities I. Manage the department of two professional staff (managing editor and publications coordinator), a marketing consultant, and numerous freelancers. A. Plan and implement publications and marketing communications projects, as agreed upon by the president, department directors, and other staff as appropriate B. Manage or supervise others in the entire editorial/production/marketing process, including budgets and schedules C. Negotiate and contract with outside authors, editors, graphic designers, printers, warehouses/distributors, and other vendors D. Provide editorial and production advice and assistance on Institute-wide communications materials, website, conferences, brochures and flyers, advertising, and other related publications marketing materials
II. Responsible for overseeing, editing, and managing specific Institute publications:
A. Land Lines (quarterly magazine in both English and Spanish) B. Annual Program catalog and annual Publications catalog C. Policy Focus Reports (four or more issues per year; with departments) D. Working Papers and Conference Papers E. Print and Electronic Books
III. Administrative Activities
A. Chair the Publications Team to insure timeliness and consistency of responses to internal publications planning and external distribution of publications. B. Attend meetings and report on publications programs to the senior staff and board of directors C. Participate in Institute evaluations and other special projects as requested
Required Experience:
Position Qualifications and Competencies
Education: Undergraduate and/or graduate education in relevant land policy and social science disciplines such as economics, sociology, public policy, urban studies, and international development, or in English, journalism, or communications
Required Experience: Relevant work experience of 7 to 10 years encompassing management of publications programs, editing, marketing communications, and related responsibilities in an academic research and/or policy development environment
Knowledge and Experience Required:
§ Management within a publications department § Publications project management § Copywriting and editing for academic publications § Publications design and production § Publications marketing in both traditional and new electronic environments
Skills Required:
§ Fluency with standard software applications including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook § Familiarity with electronic publishing and digital graphics software § Knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Mandarin not required but helpful
