Duties and Responsibilities:

F+W Mediais a leading enthusiast-based provider of community focused content, commerce, and connectivity. Through the publication of books and magazines, the hosting and management of ecommerce and vertical websites, and the production of in person and online conferences and events, F+W Media has become a leader in the passion focused markets it serves. The company is currently searching for an eBook Developer.

The eBook Developer will support new direct-to-eBook lines requiring in-house ePub creation and fast turnarounds to move eBooks to market quickly, considering critical marketing timing. Development of a wide range of eBook complexity levels, from the very simple text heavy to the highly complex. Produce clean files that have passed validation for all major eBook accounts (Apple, Barnes and Noble, Amazon). Collaborate with other departments and partners. Demonstrate fluency and execution of all current ePub specifications, including enhanced. Proactively seek and implement creative trends and ideas. Background of complex long document print design and templates a plus.

This position reports to the Director of Digital Workflow. The ideal applicant will have a strong combination of technical skills, design and productions skills along with quality assurance skills.

Technical skills:

Strong knowledge of ePub coding (XML, HTML, CSS); ePub editing tools such as BBEdit, oXygen, or Dreamweaver; FlightCrew and epubcheck
Expert in InDesign CS5.5
Advanced in supporting applications in the Adobe Creative Suite
High skill level in software/hardware troubleshooting
Familiarity with ReGex commands a plus
Familiarity scripting in Perl a plus

Design and Production skills:

Excellent typography skills and demonstrated successful use of appropriately chosen fonts for headline, body, and other special elements clearly defining hierarchy and readability
Proven ability to create clean InDesign templates incorporating all known treatments and formatting to be conducive for optimal export to the ePub format
Accurate and efficient problem-solving trouble shooting for layout issues regarding styling, formatting, and requested design changes for ePub and Kindle formats
Ability to determine and create the correct graphic formats and resolutions for an art request for the ePub and Kindle formats
Must be able to juggle multiple projects with aggressive deadlines

Quality Assurance skills:

Strong familiarity of the ePub and KF8 formats and the overall eBook environment, including all related formats, devices, and distribution channels
Strong ability to clearly communicate quality concerns and issues to both internal and external clients
Able to quickly outline and execute QA fixes

Required Experience:

Bachelors Degree required in Graphic Design, Web Design, Visual Communication or similar preferred. Related experience and/or coursework, knowledge of typography a must.
