Fall production intern

Short Description:

Hackett Publishing Company is a publisher of books in the humanities with a leading reputation in the college market. Its Cambridge, Massachusetts office, in Central Square, houses its eleven-member editorial, production, and marketing staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern will often update production archives and help to transition content from print to electronic formats, but the work will also include such tasks as proofreading, helping to prepare new manuscripts for production, applying for Library of Congress cataloging-in-publication data, reviewing compositor and print proofs, assisting with copyediting, and facilitating book design. The intern will have a dedicated workspace within which to learn basic processes of book production. Although production will constitute the foundation of the internship, the intern will receive exposure to acquisitions, development, rights and permissions, marketing, distribution, and other areas that are central to our book publishing operations.

Required Experience:

Candidate should be a college senior or a graduate student with a commitment to book publishing. An academic concentration in the humanities, and participation in a credit-granting program, will be preferred. The student should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher as well as good organizational skills, strong oral and written communication, attention to detail, excellent computer skills, and a readiness to learn new processes. This person must be a team player who can handle a variety of tasks and interact effectively with publishing staff and vendors.

Salary/Hours:

The internship will include a period of 12 to 15 weeks from September 7 to December 17, 2010. Candidate should make available a minimum of 20 hours per week Monday through Friday between 9:00 and 5:00. A schedule of days and hours will be agreed upon between the intern and the interns direct supervisor, the managing editor. This is an unpaid internship. Students may be eligible to receive credit through their college and should contact its Career Services or Internship office. Additional compensation will be determined.
