Freelance Manuscript Intake and Cleanup

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Health Effects Institute, a nonprofit organization that funds and publishes epidemiologic, toxicologic, and other research on the effects of air pollution on health, seeks assistance preparing manuscripts for its scientific copy editors. On a freelance basis, you would format electronic report files to make them editorially consistent with HEIs style requirements. Work will usually be done remotely, but initial training and periodic consultation in the Boston office of the Health Effects Institute are necessary.

Facilitate intake of documents by marking elements for special treatment in desktop publishing. Format the electronic file with correct fonts and Word styles. Review table of contents and format all heads according to house style. Remove any extraneous characters electronically (periods, hyphens, extra spaces, etc.). Make routine editorial changes. Check in-text reference citations against reference list for consistency, and format both for house style. Indicate any missing tables or figures or missing cross-references. Cross-check abbreviations with list, and format.

Required Experience:

At least 2 years of experience as a proofreader/copyeditor in print production. Experience in medical and health sciences a distinct advantage. Must be completely fluent in Microsoft Word (especially the use of Styles, Templates, and Tracked Changes).

Salary/Hours:

An hourly rate will depend on experience. Hours and work schedule will be somewhat irregular and dependent on each projects demands.
